Golfer, Gary Player, was interviewed by a journalist after he came off the course. The journalist suggested Player had had a lucky round – you know the sort of thing, 20 yard putts go down the hole. Player’s response was along the lines of, “I find the harder I practice, the luckier I get.”

I can’t remember who talked about ‘getting in the way of luck’. But the point is, luck isn’t always down to luck. We can do things to influence the way events turn out. I will never be a lucky lottery winner because I have never bought a ticket.

If we tell only one person about our business perhaps we should start buying lottery tickets. If we tell 1,000 people they’ll all want a share of our lottery winnings but at least we have a thousand times better prospect of doing business.

  1. Good bank holiday morning to you, David
I like the definition of luck that says it is preparedness meeting opportunity. In other words you have to do something (buy a lottery ticket) that gives you a chance when the opportunity comes up.
By the way, today you are featuring with foxes over at workfromhomewisdom.com…

  2. That’s a good definition of luck Judy.

After reading your post on the merits of foxes compared with cats, I suddenly worried that your readers will rush out to replace their cats with foxes. I should have mentioned that foxes have a nasty habit of killing hens. Apparently the answer is to keep an alpaca or two as they will see off the foxes. There is an alpaca breeder a couple of miles from me if anyone needs one!

  3. I am not sure what cats, foxes and alpaca have to do with creating luck, but it has made me smile!

  4. Sorry to confuse you Nicky. As you may have guessed, there are two conversations going on here. But if we have made you smile we have served a useful purpose. And just for you, there will be a post on smiling coming up in the next week or two.

  5. In this great world of ours you make your own luck in my opinion. Get yourself in positions of opportunity and you will ultimately make things happen for yourself. Of course it doesn’t happen everything day but if you throw enough mud at the wall….
